Take a Stand
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 2:13 and Acts 7:55–60
Series: Comments on Galatians
I am reminded of those whom the Church has largely forgotten: the men who chose to translate the scriptures into the common language. In the late-14th century, John Wyclif stood against Church and government when he gave the English people a Bible in their own language. 150 years later, Martin Luther did the same in Germany. Just a couple of years later, William Tyndale did the same for England (from Germany). The latter two were aided by the printing press that was invented midway between Wyclif’s and their lives.
These men took a stand to do what they knew to be right when the empowered majority opposed them. To be clear, it was not The Church that decided to give the people the Scripture in a language they could read. They were individual men who, by the grace of God, accomplished this monumental task. Those individuals changed the course of history, doing so against great odds and some paying with their lives.
