From the Confessions: The Defense of the Augsburg Confession
Christ calls marriage a divine union when he says, “What therefore God has joined together...” (Matthew 19:6).
Pulling It Together
Christ himself says here that married people are joined together by God. He is quoting Moses and then adds that it is God who joins them together. This mystical union cannot be created by human action; it is God alone who is able to unite two people as one (cp. Genesis 2:24, Mark 10:8-9). Therefore, marriage is a pure and holy estate because it is a work of God.
